Intro to Lead Climbing

Are you regularly climbing in the gym and interested in taking your climbing to the next level? Tired of being confined to the top rope routes? Then this might be the clinic for you! In this three hour clinic we’ll discuss lead equipment, clipping techniques, lead climbing techniques, lead belaying, and catching leader falls. Come prepared, this will be full session!

Prerequisites: Ability to climb indoors at a 5.10- level; minimum 3 months top-rope belay experience.

Required Equipment: Harness, belay device, belay carabiner, rock shoes. Option: Your own climbing rope.

About the Instructor

Over the last 10 or so years, John has been turning a passion for exploring wild places and meeting new and exciting people into a lifelong pursuit and sustainable career. This adventure has has given him the opportunity to guide a variety of activities all over the country and internationally, and teach groups of all ages how to climb, kayak, ice climb, ski, camp, and even ride a bike for the very first time. On his own adventures, he heads into the mountains in search of clean, remote, and secluded lines to either climb or ski (depending on the season). He is currently based in Portland, Oregon, and works as the Education Program Coordinator for the Mazamas.
