Katie hails from Minneapolis, Minnesota, where she grew up exploring the little-known mountain ranges of the American Midwest. She discovered climbing while cross country ski racing for Dartmouth College in New Hampshire and quickly fell in love after cutting her teeth on the old-school climbs of Cannon Cliff and Cathedral. After a career in professional ski racing, Katie decided to pursue climbing, moving to Canmore, Alberta and guiding high-altitude alpine climbing around the Americas. Now, Katie lives in Boulder, CO, where she balances climbing with the rigors of academic studies.
Katie loves almost every kind of climbing from sport to alpine climbing. This is because she values the different things you can learn and experience from each type, but mostly because she really likes to try hard, ideally at as many things as possible. A lifetime of endurance sports gave her the ability to suffer really well for long periods of time in the cold, and she tries to use that skill as much as possible to go play in the mountains on long alpine routes. One of Katie’s favorite aspects of climbing is the deep relationships developed with climbing partners and friends.
Some of the accomplishments in the mountains that Katie is most proud of include mixed climbing ascents to M13, exploratory rock climbing in the interior of British Columbia, big alpine ascents in the Alaska Range, and the women’s speed records for Denali and Mt. Rainier.
